(Hong Kong, 27 June 2022) — Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation (HKSTP) organised the annual Robocon 2022 Hong Kong Contest, which aims to nurture future leaders in the innovation and technology (I&T) industry. The annual contest saw over 200 students across different disciplines from eight tertiary institutions, come together to form a record total of 14 teams. Following several rounds of head-to-head contests, Golden Striker from The Chinese University of Hong Kong was crowned this year’s champion. The Robocon 2022 Hong Kong Contest was supported by a number of cross-sector companies to jointly foster the development of I&T culture.

Returning to a physical format, this year’s contest saw a jubilant atmosphere as teams competed in front of a live audience. Each participating team developed sophisticated and intelligent robots to enter the competition, a testament to their outstanding skills in mechanical engineering, electronics, and computer programming.

Outstanding participants will receive internship opportunities from leading enterprises, including Integrated Solutions Ltd, Faulhaber Drive System Technology (Taicang) Co., Ltd, Karmo International Co Ltd, Novelte Robotics Ltd, and The Hong Kong and China Gas Company Limited, etc.. Bank of China (Hong Kong) Ltd also awarded cash prizes to winning teams to support their continued research in innovative technologies.

Albert Wong, CEO of HKSTP, said, “The Robocon 2022 Hong Kong Contest shows that Hong Kong young people are talented in I&T and they are interested in joining the industry. We are pleased to see that more companies from different sectors value the I&T talent and support the competition this year, which accelerates the development of I&T culture. As HKSTP marks our 20th year of propelling success and innovation, we truly believe that talent is imperative to the growth of Hong Kong’s I&T ecosystem which will also help position Hong Kong as the international I&T talent hub.

“Lagori” was the theme of this year's competition which comes from a traditional Indian game. In each game, the “Seeker Team” and “Hitter Team” were pitted against each other. This required the Seeker Team to first throw balls and knock down a Lagori Tower constructed from sponge discs and rebuild the tower within a set time. At the same time, the Hitter Team’s objective was to throw balls to shoot down a ball placed on top of the Seeker Team’s robot while the Seeker Team was rebuilding the tower to prevent them from scoring. The team with the highest score won the game.

This year’s participants came from a diverse range of backgrounds, skills and domain knowledge, which suggests young people are having a greater interest and understanding of I&T. The winning team will “go global” and represent Hong Kong at ABU Asia-Pacific Robot Contest 2022 New Delhi, India, another opportunity to meet and network with top talents and teams from across Asia-Pacific.
