Open Banking is rapidly transforming the world’s financial and technology sectors. In Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) launched the Interbank Account Data Sharing (IADS) initiative last year. The IADS initiative was developed with strong support from the banking industry and sets clear rules and standards for customer-consented sharing of bank account data among participating banks. It enables customers to securely and efficiently share account data between participating banks, subject to explicit consent, and provide a solid foundation for financial innovation.
To accelerate collaboration between fintech firms and the banking sector while supporting the growth of Hong Kong’s fintech ecosystem, we are organising the IADS Developer Hackathon, in collaboration with the HKMA as co-organiser. Leveraging HKSTP’s extensive network and expertise on the IADS Developer Platform, the Hackathon aims to drive impactful innovation and advance Hong Kong’s vision of becoming a leading digital economy.

FAQ
1) Our firm is based outside of Hong Kong, are we eligible?
A: Yes. We invite innovative solutions from all regions. The evaluation will consider the solution's applicability to the Hong Kong market.
2) What data will be provided?
All data provided to Hackathon participants is synthetic data. There is no real customer data, and the synthetic data does not match any specific bank.
3) What if our solution only covers either retail or corporate/SME, not both?
That is acceptable. Solutions may focus on either segment, or apply to both.
4) Can a firm apply with an idea, or does it need to be a working product?
Both are accepted. While our primary focus is on refined solutions intended for adoption by the industry, we seek to provide a platform to introduce and cultivate a diverse array of innovative ideas and solutions related to IADS.
5) Will intellectual property (IP) be protected during the Competition?
Yes. Intellectual property protection is a critical aspect of the Hackathon. To safeguard participants’ IP rights, information is shared only with essential parties involved in the Hackathon, including the organisers, mentors, judges, and the designated consultant.
About IADS
The IADS initiative was devised by the HKMA and launched with the full support of the banking industry. The IADS initiative formulates the rules and standards that facilitate interbank customer-consent data sharing. This allows customers to securely and efficiently share their bank account data between participating banks, subject to explicit customer consent. Account data sharing helps digitalise banking operations, strengthens the risk management of banks, and enhances the customer experience. For more details about the IADS initiative, please visit HKMA's website.
About IADS Developer Platform
The HKMA, in collaboration with the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation, launched the “IADS Developer Platform.” This one-stop platform provides testing account data and simulated application programming interfaces (APIs) from participating banks, facilitating collaboration between banks and technology firms to jointly develop more data-driven products and services.
