The Charles K. Kao Auditorium, affectionately known as “The Golden Egg”, is the architectural centrepiece at Hong Kong Science and Technology Park (HKSTP). The auditorium was named after Sir Charles Kao Kuen, regarded as the “Father of Fibre Optic Communication” and founding member as well as former Director of HKSTP,  in honour of his visionary achievements that revolutionised modern communication and the trajectory of human advancement.

In 2009, Charles Kao was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics, becoming the first Nobel laureates to hail from Hong Kong.
