Founded in 2015, the HKSTP Venture Fund (also known as HKSTP Corporate Venture Fund) totals HK$1 billion as of early-2023, where every HK$1 invested by HKSTP attracts an external investment of HK$18 to support startups at different stages of funding. Expanding its coverage to ventures beyond Series A stage, the Venture Fund has so far invested in 27 technology ventures, while Park companies and incubatees have raised funds totalling about HK$80.5 billion since FY2018.

To strengthen the synergies among various GBA cities, we set up HKSTP’s Shenzhen branch in 2023, with aim to provide I&T talent resources and training across the Greater Bay Area. Furthermore, we offer business development and investment matching support to GBA enterprises, helping them to go global and attract foreign investments while also providing access for Hong Kong and international companies to capture opportunities in the mainland market.

Industrial Estates Repositioning into “InnoPark” – Capitialising Cutting-edge Research and Innofacturing a Brighter Tomorrow

Marrying I&T and industrial development, HKSTP is on a mission to transform Hong Kong’s R&D and manufacturing capabilities in fostering the city’s diversified economy through I&T-driven projects, attracting investments and realising the vision of “new industrialisation”. Repositioning the three industrial estates in Yuen Long, Tai Po and Tseung Kwan O into “InnoPark” in 2021, we drive “Innofacturing Tomorrow” through eight guiding principles: generating local industrial output, investing in Hong Kong’s industries, creating high-quality employment opportunities, producing technology-based products, introducing advanced technological processes, incorporating I&T and R&D elements, aligning production with local needs, and developing sustainable businesses.

This repositioning is supported by the Advanced Manufacturing Centre (AMC) in the Tseung Kwan O site, completed in 2022, and the Microelectronics Centre (MEC) in the Yuen Long site, due to open in 2024. Additionally, the MARS Centre in the Tai Po site was refurbished and launched in 2022. We are also exploring a second AMC to increase Hong Kong’s capacity for high value-added, technology-intensive manufacturing processes and production lines.

HKSTP Supports Tech Ventures to Fast-track Commercialisation and Go Public

Home to the city’s largest R&D base and a world-class innovation ecosystem, HKSTP helps tech ventures thrive and go global through investment initiatives like the HKSTP Venture Fund, and by providing integrated and interconnected infrastructure and capabilities to fast-track commercialisation and adoption.

SenseTime, which evolved from a locally groomed team at HKSTP and supported by the Venture Fund to become successfully listed on the main board of the Hong Kong Stock Exchange in December 2021, is Hong Kong’s first AI unicorn and provides applications ranging from Smart Business, Smart City, Smart Life and Smart Auto.

HKSTP’s support in providing impressive facilities, talent and a fundraising platform helped another home-grown company, OrbusNeich, a major global medical device manufacturer specialising in interventional instruments for percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) and percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA) procedures, to explore new applications and go public in December 2022.

HKSTP Cultivating A Vibrant Green Technology Ecosystem To Reach Net-Zero by 2045

HKSTP is propelling sustainable technology development in cultivating a vibrant green technology ecosystem to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2045, five years ahead of the Hong Kong Climate Action Plan 2050 Carbon Naturality target. This aligns with the internationally recognised Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) to limit global temperature rise to 1.5°C.

Going forward, technology will drive sustainability while sustainability will further shape technology development. As the first statutory body in Hong Kong to commit to net-zero by 2045, HKSTP will be leading Hong Kong's Innovation & Technology (I&T) sector to foster green tech and climate solutions and create new values for Hong Kong and beyond. HKSTP will work collectively with its 100+ green tech ventures and partners to build a green technology ecosystem, driving sustainable climate I&T development and paving the way for Hong Kong to become an international green technology and green finance centre.
