Sir Charles K. Kao’s Story: Sparks from the Sand

The Charles K. Kao Auditorium, affectionately known as the “Golden Egg,” is the architectural centrepiece at Hong Kong Science Park. The auditorium was named after Sir Charles K. Kao, regarded as the “Father of Fibre Optic Communication,” in honour of his visionary achievements that have revolutionised modern communication and the trajectory of human advancement. In 2009, Sir Charles K. Kao was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics, becoming the first Nobel laureate to hail from Hong Kong.

From 10 September 2025, we present you with the exhibition “Sir Charles K. Kao’s Story: Sparks from the Sand”, showcasing Sir Kao's story in developing fibre optics from sand—an innovation that transformed the world. This exhibition aims to inspire more innovators to embrace Sir Kao's pioneering spirit, pursue groundbreaking discoveries and propel themselves toward success.
