HKSTP partners with Siemens in Hong Kong’s first Smart City Digital Hub in Science Park
(Hong Kong, 14 September 2017) - Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation (“HKSTP”) has entered into an agreement with Siemens Limited for the first Smart City Digital Hub in Hong Kong Science Park. The Smart City Digital Hub will initially consist of a Smart Mobility Test Bed and a Smart Energy Lab to accelerate the development of smart city related digital analytic applications. It will be powered by MindSphere, an open cloud-based IoT (Internet of Things) operating system developed by Siemens with data analytics and connectivity capabilities. It provides infrastructure providers and start-ups a platform to make good use of data and come up with innovations tackling city challenges, which in turn lead to more solutions for smart city development in Hong Kong.
“We are glad to have Siemens, a global technology powerhouse, to join hands in strengthening the support services that we provide to innovators in our innovation and technology ecosystem. The collaboration underscores the unique role of Hong Kong Science Park as a regional hub that showcases innovative solutions and provides a test bed that helps facilitate technological commercialisation, as well as creates enormous synergy for all members in the ecosystem to turn their ideas into reality. The Smart City Digital Hub is expected to ramp up the R&D of smart city technologies developed by companies in Science Park. We welcome more technology corporations of all sizes to work with us in enhancing the ever-growing collaborative power of our ecosystem,” said Albert Wong, Chief Executive Officer of HKSTP.
“The agreement reconfirms Siemens’ intention to build up Hong Kong as a smart city and develop key partnerships among industry leaders. Certain challenges faced by Hong Kong today can be solved through digitalisation. With Smart City Digital Hub, we look forward to working with HKSTP to build a smarter Hong Kong,” said Eric Chong, President and CEO, Siemens Hong Kong and Macao.
HKSTP has been actively steering Smart City as one of the key technology platforms. The rising number of connected devices and enormous data flow in the city offer a huge potential for the development of Smart City. With the active support of various stakeholders in the innovation and technology ecosystem, HKSTP launched Data Studio in February this year to provide a data platform for co-creation with industries and software developers, It was followed by the opening of the Sensor Hub earlier this month to accelerate the test of sensing technologies. The Smart City Digital Hub will officially open later this year. It will complement existing support to the ecosystem in Science Park and pave the way for more innovative smart city solutions under the HKSTP’s Smart Region development plan.
