Professor Sun Dong Visits Advanced Manufacturing Centre to Witness “Innofacturing” Unlocking New Opportunities

(Hong Kong, 20 September 2023) – Professor Sun Dong, Secretary for Innovation, Technology and Industry, today visited the Advanced Manufacturing Centre (AMC) to tour the research and development facilities of the New Horizon Group’s Hong Kong Satellite Manufacturing Center and Nanoshields Technology (Nanoshields), as well as attended a presentation from representatives of the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation (HKSTP) to learn about InnoParks’ latest developments.

Professor Sun Dong attended the “Hong Kong Star” launch ceremony at the Hong Kong Satellite Manufacturing Center for his first stop. The event celebrated the successful assembly, testing and launching of the city’s first internationally competitive hyperspectral remote sensing satellite in Tseung Kwan O InnoPark, fully demonstrating Hong Kong’s capabilities in developing the aerospace industry.

The Center plans to launch “Hong Kong Space Satellite Constellation” formed by 720 satellites including the “Hong Kong Star” satellites before 2029, aiming to create high-quality satellites and develop space technology solutions. During his speech at the event, Professor Sun said, “The Hong Kong Innovation and Technology Development Blueprint, announced by the HKSAR Government last year, identifies new industrialisation as a crucial path for development. Driving this new industrialisation will invigorate Hong Kong's economy, enhancing its dynamism and resilience. Today, we've seen New Horizons Holdings Limited embodies Hong Kong's innovation and technological strength through impressive 'Made in Hong Kong' manufacturing achievements. The HKSAR Government is deeply committed to pushing forward Hong Kong's innovation and technology development. We have rolled out a variety of policy measures aimed at promoting Research and Development, enhancing infrastructure, cultivating talent, and providing robust support for startups.” 

Accompanied by Oscar Wong, Head of Business Development of HKSTP, Professor Sun also toured the Nanoshields production facility at the AMC to gain insights into the advanced nanofiber material technology and its development in Hong Kong. The facility's four electrospinning production lines for nanofiber material are expected to produce over 1,000 tons of nanofiber material annually, with its smart production process achieving a much higher yield compared to traditional methods. 

Located at Tseung Kwan O InnoPark, the AMC aims to promote “new industrialisation” by providing a premier base for advanced manufacturing. With a ceiling height of 6 metres on each floor and a grid size of 12m x 12m, if offers a scalable, high-efficiency production space. Tailored logistics services assist enterprises of different sizes to achieve high value-added manufacturing. HKSTP is dedicated to driving “Innofacturing” through innovation and technology. It repositioned the city’s three Industrial Estates as “InnoParks” in 2021, unlocking new opportunities for Hong Kong’s emerging industries.
