Science Park Career Expo 2016 Attracted Over 5,400 Visitors
(Hong Kong, 5 March 2016) - Organised by Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation (“HKSTP”), the “Career Expo at Science Park 2016” successfully attracted a record high of over 5,400 students, fresh graduates and job seekers. As the largest Innovation and Technology (“I&T”)-themed job fair in town, the Expo served as a one-stop platform for participants to explore career opportunities, gather latest industry update and information on various support to start-ups. This year, 1,000 full-time, part-time and internship openings spanning across R&D, technical, project management, sales & marketing were offered by 100 companies from Science Park, InnoCenter and the three industrial estates managed by HKSTP.
As in previous years, this year’s Expo continued to receive enthusiastic support from industry partners, professional associations and HR consultant firms. Companies who were recruiting came from diversified background, including biomedical technology, cloud computing, electronics, ICT, green technology, precision engineering, multimedia design and etc. Representatives from leading corporations such as HAESL, Johnson Electric and TCL were present at a series of career talks to share with participants the latest technology trends and hiring criteria.
As one of the key driving forces for Hong Kong’s innovation and technology development, HKSTP is dedicated to nurturing talents. By hosting the Expo, HKSTP acts as the connector to create a vibrant I&T ecosystem that drives continuous growth and development for the industry.
Allen Ma, Chief Executive Officer of HKSTP, said “Through our 3Cs strategy – Connect, Collaborate, and Catalyse, we strive to collaborate with industry partners and to foster better understanding among the young generation in regards to the promising career prospect offered by the I&T industry. In tackling worldwide challenges such as ageing population and growing urban density, technology applications and solutions in relation to Robotics, Healthy Ageing and Smart City are thriving. We see the development opportunities that lie ahead, and would like to, through this Expo event, encourage more talents to join the workforce. In addition, to help prepare our young generation for the jobs of the future, we will also continue our efforts in promoting STEM education which help students develop logical thinking and problem-solving skills.”
At the opening ceremony of the Expo event, four executives from leading corporations of different industries were invited to share their insights on how to develop a successful career. They included Andy Bien, Chief Information Officer of Airport Authority Hong Kong; Chuck Cheng, Chief Executive Officer of AppoTech; Jon Chung, Director, Marketing of Fuji Xerox (Hong Kong); and Edmond Lai, Executive Director of Gammon Construction. The executives all agreed that being passionate and adhering to one’s dreams, having the courage to test out one’s ideas yet not being afraid of failures, as well as life-long learning are keys to success.
“In this technology everywhere era, it is crucial to develop personal traits in order to succeed in one’s career. The five essential qualities are: self-confidence, curiosity, ambitions, creativity and perseverance. To better prepare for the future, young people should also expand their horizons of inter-disciplinary knowledge and skills, from science to arts and humanity subjects. They should stay hungry and stay curious. This way, sky's the limit for them,” commented Ma.
The special highlight of this year’s Expo is the debut of the “CEO Shadowing Programme”. Through its connection, HKSTP successfully invited the C-level executives from seven leading corporations, namely AppoTech, Cisco, Fuji Xerox (Hong Kong), Gammon Construction, Hong Kong Computer Society, Hong Kong Quality Assurance Agency (HKQAA) and Hung Hing Off-set Printing, to join the Programme. Executives from these companies will act as mentors and spend three working days with shortlisted students who will have the valuable chance to learn from these renowned industry leaders.
At the one-day Expo event, job seekers, fresh graduates and students from universities and secondary schools actively participated in a series of workshops, career talks and sharing sessions. They were inspired and prepared to plan ahead for the future.
