HKSTP’s 1st iDM2 Hardware Accelerator Programme Concludes with Flying Colours
Hong Kong, 26 April 2019 – Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation ("HKSTP”) announced the completion of its first iDM2 Hardware Accelerator (“iDM2” or “the Programme”). Ten participating incubatees from the Park showcased their innovative products and solutions on the Demonstration Day with the aim of showing their success in overcoming difficulties in hardware manufacturing. This was achieved by developing practical design solutions following a six-month training programme and with support from a professional team of partners – a remarkable step for greater market access in the Greater Bay Area.
Initiated by HKSTP, iDM2 is one of many enhanced programmes and value-added services. The Programme has drawn an overwhelming response, since its inception in September 2018, attracting more than 10 park companies and incubatees. The six-month programme provides comprehensive training to equip the start-ups with fundamental knowledge on product “Idea”, “Design”, “Manufacturing” and “Go to Market”, with a view to accelerating the hardware manufacturing process. Additionally, iDM2 connects them with industry practitioners and professionals who offer knowledge sharing and assist in running “specialist clinics” that provide consultancy services such as product design, system-on-chip, tooling and product certification. The first graduates have earned wide recognition by garnering a total of nine domestic and international awards.
iDM2 also held a 3-day tour to Dongguan, China, which was co-organised with Dongguan Songshan Lake-Hong Kong-Macao Innovation & Integration Centre. Highlight of the tour was a “Matchmaking Session”, at which 22 local enterprises and 50 overseas scholars took turns to meet and greet with potential partners, with the aim of assisting them in tackling issues throughout the hardware manufacturing to marketing development process.

I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to our strategic partners - Federation of Hong Kong Industries, Hong Kong Design Centre and Dongguan Songshan Lake-Hong Kong-Macao Innovation & Integration Centre as well as our industry partners such as Arrow, Aztech, IBM, Infineon, PDSTE, Samsung and Toshiba – their support is of utmost importance in laying a solid foundation to success – that is to take innovative ideas to hardware manufacturing and facilitate supply chain.”
The Demonstration Day saw 10 participating incubatees showcase their innovative products and solutions in the areas of Smart Health, Smart Living and Artificial Intelligence. This was followed by two rounds of voting by a judging panel consisting of HKSTP, the strategic partners and representatives from the business and education sectors, as well as the audience. The judging panel awarded Aerosim (HK) Limited with the “The Greatest Potential Award” and Contact Beverage Limited won a majority of the ballots and garnered “The Most Desired Product Award” from the audience.
Accukit Technology Limited, one of the graduates in the first iDM2, develops therapeutic devices which help knee osteoarthritis rehabilitation. Mr. Sam Chu of Accukit Technology Limited said: “iDM2 provided professionals in product design and manufacturing offering us comprehensive training, ranging from patent and technologies to legal knowledge and manufacturing. It enables us to have a deeper knowledge of the process from product design to manufacturing. This is not something we can learn from university or a research centre. Additionally, the Programme allows us to learn more about our own company and market demand, driving us to take the idea to hardware manufacturing. Working in collaboration with the Faculty of Medicine of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, we found the best way to produce our product and how to best plan to maximize our market potential for our latest therapeutic device which will be launched in September to October this year.”
King City Technology Limited, another participating company in iDM2, specialises in radar sensors that detect human body movement to help the study of human traffic flow. Mr. Gary Wong, CEO and Co-founder of King City Technology Limited, said: “The Programme connected us to Dongguan Songshan Lake-Hong Kong-Macao Innovation & Integration Centre as well as local factories and manufacturing partners. This enables us to have a clearer picture of the whole process of production and a better knowledge of more, newer technologies. We learnt a lot from iDM2. The Programme will significantly benefit tech people, whatever their level of experience. Currently, our radar sensors have been implemented in different areas, and other potential collaboration projects are on track as well.”
The second iDM2 initiative commenced in mid-April and 15 incubatees and 3 park companies were selected to enroll in the Programme from the 30 applicants. They have already completed the first phase of trainings and are moving forward to the second phase of training which focuses on product design and accreditation.
