(Hong Kong, 6 September 2017) - Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation (HKSTP) announced the launch of the Sensor Hub in Hong Kong Science Park, making the Park as an open platform for testing latest sensor technologies to expedite the research and development of related innovative products and solutions.
As a Sensor Hub, Science Park provides a real environment for testing sensors and collects real-time sensor data and feedback for evaluation and analytics.
The first phase of the Sensor Hub operation involves testing Smart Water Sensors for measuring water temperature, dissolved oxygen and pH value; Air Sensing that monitors air quality and detection of dust particles PM2.5 and PM10; and Weathering Sensing including UVA and UVB Light Sensor, Lightning Sensor and 3-in-1 Digital Sensor that measures pressure, humidity and temperature. Real-time measurements collected by the sensors can be viewed on a dashboard accessible with a QR code via mobile devices. The collected live data will be made available freely through a cloud platform and contributed to Data Studio for software developers to leverage their data for innovation and R&D to devise socio-economically beneficial solutions.
Sensor Hub enhances dynamic collaboration in Science Park ecosystem
HKSTP welcomed Arrow Asia Pac Limited (Arrow) as the first strategic partner to join force with us in the Sensor Hub to develop a smarter Hong Kong through sensing technologies. Through the Sensor Hub, the parties intend to enhance the synergy for technology development and inspire more work on innovative sensor-related technologies and applications. It will also serve to connect companies and other stakeholders of the ecosystem in the whole technology chain, from ideas to production. Other partner companies currently involved in the Sensor Hub are AMS, Honeywell, Libelium, TE and Vishay.
HKSTP Chief Executive Officer Albert Wong said, “The rapid development of IoT has significantly boosted the demand for sensors, so much so that the industry expects there will be one trillion sensors supporting the IoT by 2020. Sensor technology is a pillar for powering smart city, one of the three key platforms that HKSTP champions. We are seeing more members of our ecosystem involved in developing sensor technology. Hong Kong Science Park makes for an ideal site for the Sensor Hub, and HKSTP will provide the right support to the ecosystem to come up with more innovations. We also strive to inspire a new generation of sensor scientists among the young people in our society, through organising education tours of the Sensor Hub.”
Operational at Hong Kong Science Park since June 2016, Arrow announced its Open Lab expansion today, the lab provides comprehensive technical support to start-ups and SMEs in research and development of new sensors. The expansion proves that the collaborative culture of the Science Park ecosystem is favourable for accelerating the R&D work of the inter-related technology clusters in the Park.
