HKSTP Launches Data Technology Hub to Enhance Hong Kong’s World-Class ICT Ecosystem and Establish the Future Data Economy
(Hong Kong, 28 January 2021) – Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation (HKSTP) today launched the Data Technology Hub (DT Hub) in the Tseung Kwan O Industrial Estate, to further enhance the thriving ICT ecosystem of world-class data centres and telecoms infrastructure, and accelerate Hong Kong’s development of the data economy.
DT Hub, a dedicated base for ICT and data-centric businesses, is the ideal complement to the adjacent Advanced Manufacturing Centre, developed by HKSTP to realise the government vision for re-industrialisation and to diversify the city’s economy through digital transformation and the creation of new industry. Corporates can benefit from the growing world-class ecosystem and infrastructure to harness the huge growth potential of data-driven ICT innovation.
Strategically situated in the HKSTP-operated Tseung Kwan O industrial estate, which is home to a cluster of Hong Kong’s most advanced data centres supported by state-of-the-art data infrastructure, DT Hub companies can connect and co-create with existing world-class operators in cloud computing, hosting services, telecoms, internet services, 5G and IoT.
Albert Wong, Chief Executive Officer of HKSTP, said: “DT Hub is another foundation piece which further elevates Hong Kong’s status as Asia’s leading innovation and technology hub. In our digitally integrated world, data is the fuel for every industry today, and in the future. The hub serves as a much-needed catalyst to foster the fast growth of data and technology-intense companies, support digital transformation in traditional industries, attract top talent, as well as generate new value to benefit our city’s economy and society.”
Notable features of DT Hub include high ceilings with raised floor for rack enclosures and cable management, built-in exclusive trunk bundled with a massive number of dark fibre for powerful transmission in accelerating big data analytics and supporting data research and technology development. With rare dual power feeds, DT Hub ensures highly substantial and reliable power supply. On-demand 24-hour chilled water supply is backed up by a generator to ensure that different sizes of pipes can be laid and filled with chilled water to cool down servers in addition to air-conditioners. Partner companies can also benefit from HKSTP’s comprehensive value-added services and support programmes, including access to early-stage investment, technology, talent acquisition and business expansion.
HKSTP welcomed the first batch of tenants to move into DT Hub including BuyLive, LUMI Technology, Shun Hing Technology and Speedy Group, etc. Shun Hing Technology will establish a Technology Engagement Centre in DT Hub which will help realise innovations from startups for local pressing problems. By joining its ecosystem, Shun Hing Technology can accelerate co-creation and partnerships with companies across HKSTP’s extensive ecosystem of innovation and technology companies.
Gary Ng, Managing Director of Shun Hing Technology, said “Our long history here in Hong Kong has given us a deep understanding of the needs of local enterprises and the community, as well as the formula for successful innovation development. DT Hub is exactly what our city needs to accelerate the next generation of local innovation and success.”
DT Hub is also adjacent to HKSTP’s Advanced Manufacturing Centre (AMC), slated to launch in 2022 Q2. AMC offers a high-spec fully-serviced production base for advanced manufacturing. AMC bridges the gap from research to industry, making it accessible for innovators that demand world-class process excellence to innovate, design, and make in Hong Kong. Both DT Hub and AMC are the pilot projects that extend HKSTP’s thriving innovation and technology ecosystem through to the industrial estates and accelerate the re-industrialisation journey.
HKSTP is also announcing a major collaboration with global integrated logistics service provider, DB Schenker, as the exclusive logistics partner for AMC – making this project Asia’s first multi-industry advanced manufacturing facility, integrated with automated and smart logistics solutions. LUMI Technology, a smart materials and acoustics company, is the tenant of both DT Hub and AMC.
Dr. Shuyu Chen, Director of LUMI Technology, said, “We combine data and our AI algorithm, with advanced manufacturing to turn conventional materials into sound-absorbing metamaterials. Both DT Hub and AMC will provide us with the one-stop capability to very rapidly turn our digital models into prototypes and ready-to-market products.”
