HKSTP Congratulates CATL on Successful HKEX Listing CATL International R&D Centre Drives Local Innovation, R&D and Talent Development

(Hong Kong, 20 May 2025) — The Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation (HKSTP) congratulates Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited (CATL) (3750.HK), a global leader of new energy innovative technologies, for its successful listing on the Main Board of the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. The 20 May listing raised HK$35.65 billion, making it the world’s largest initial public offering since 2023. It marks the company's comprehensive integration into the global capital market and also a new starting point for it to promote the development of the zero-carbon economy in the world.
HKSTP is fully committed to fostering I&T development. In 2024, it successfully invited CATL to establish its International R&D Centre at Hong Kong Science Park with over 8,000 sq. ft. in size. The facility is the company’s sixth R&D centre in the world, a strategy that leverages Hong Kong’s unique advantages of being “backed by the motherland and connected to the world”. It also exemplifies the company’s strong confidence in the city’s innovation and technology (I&T) sector. CATL specialises in the development, research and innovation of new energy technologies. Usage of its EV batteries has ranked first around the globe for eight consecutive years, while its energy storage shipments have led the world for four consecutive years.
Eric Or, Acting Chief Corporate Development Officer of HKSTP, commented: “HKSTP is pleased to see CATL leveraging Hong Kong’s areas of strength—financing, scientific research and talent—to promote collaboration among the industry, academia and research sector and, ultimately, advance Hong Kong’s new energy and green tech innovation. We are steadfast in our mission to foster a vibrant I&T ecosystem, facilitate cross-sector collaboration and accelerate the translation of scientific research into market solutions. We look forward to welcoming more top-tier enterprises like CATL to the Park, further consolidating Hong Kong’s position as an international I&T hub.”
The CATL International R&D Centre currently focuses on artificial intelligence (AI), and the research and development of polymer materials. It is also dedicated to AI+, the deep integration of AI technologies across sectors to facilitate industrial transformation, foster upgrading and drive innovative development. Some of these areas include robotics, scenario-specific large language models, polymer materials research and zero-emission technologies. The company aims to strengthen collaboration with startups within the HKSTP ecosystem in the fields of AI and new energy to create greater synergies.
To support its future development, CATL is collaborating with Hong Kong universities on joint R&D projects and creating application scenarios. At the same time, the company plans to recruit over 200 local and overseas professionals specialising in AI, polymer materials development, frontier technology applications and lithium-ion battery technologies. These initiatives will nurture new waves of I&T talent, promote collaboration among the industry, academia and research sector and accelerate the development of Hong Kong’s new energy value chain while creating high-end employment opportunities.
