HKSTP and CLP Power Drive Residential Electrification at “Sustainable Residential Living Conference”
(Hong Kong, 20 August 2026) – Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation (HKSTP) and CLP Power Hong Kong Limited (CLP Power) jointly hosted the “Sustainable Residential Living Conference” at Hong Kong Science Park today, bringing together stakeholders from government, industry, academia, research and investment communities to discuss decarbonisation pathways and sustainable development strategies for the residential sector. The event attracted more than 200 industry participants. It also featured an on-site I&T showcase area presenting cutting-edge green technologies from ten HKSTP partner companies and R&D centres.
The seminar was officiated by Hong Kong Housing Society Chairman Prof Ling Kar-kan. He was joined by CLP Power Managing Director Mr Joseph Law and HKSTP CEO Mr Terry Wong, in engaging with industry representatives on the future direction of residential electrification.
Hong Kong Housing Society Chairman Prof Ling Kar-kan said, “Promoting residential electrification is essential to advancing low-carbon living and smart communities. The Hong Kong Housing Society has long been committed to creating a more comfortable and environmentally friendly living environment, and has worked closely with CLP Power over the years to promote energy efficiency and electrification, including the use of energy-efficient appliances such as induction cookers and electric water heaters in our projects. I am pleased to see HKSTP and CLP Power providing a platform for industry exchange and collaboration on residential electrification. With the Northern Metropolis set to add more than 500,000 new residential units, alongside the growth of innovation and technology and other emerging sectors, Hong Kong will need to meet rising electricity demand while pursuing decarbonisation and sustainability. This creates unprecedented opportunities for residential electrification and the adoption of cleaner, more efficient energy solutions that support economic growth, improve community wellbeing, and strengthen Hong Kong’s livability and competitiveness.”
CLP Power Managing Director Mr Joseph Law said, “To achieve Hong Kong’s carbon neutrality target by 2050, low-carbon living must be integrated into every household. CLP Power will continue to drive the electrification of residential buildings through all-electric homes, smart energy management and innovative low-carbon solutions, supporting residential developments to become more energy efficient, smarter and more sustainable. HKSTP CEO Mr Terry Wong said: “Green technology should not remain confined to the laboratory. It must be brought into the community and integrated into everyday life in order to deliver meaningful impact. As the orchestrator of the innovation and technology (I&T) ecosystem, HKSTP’s role is not only to bring together I&T enterprises, but also to link their strengths together and connect them to genuine market needs. This collaboration with CLP Power provides an excellent example of how innovative technologies can be aligned with industry demand. Through platforms of this kind, we hope to raise the profile of capable local green solutions and support their wider adoption, thereby accelerating Hong Kong’s transition to a low-carbon future.”
The seminar featured keynote sharing sessions by a number of distinguished speakers, including HKSTP Director of Technical Services Mr CF Ma; EMSD Chief Engineer Mr Lam Ping-wai; Construction Industry Council Chairperson of Committee on Environment and Sustainability Ar Clarence Leung; and Hong Kong Housing Society Director (Projects) Ir Franco Cheung. Topics discussed included smart and sustainable I&T parks, collaborative energy systems, and energy efficiency in public housing.
A panel discussion was also held during the seminar, moderated by CLP Power Director of Customer Success and Sales Professor Anthony Lo. Joining the discussion were ATAL Analogue Holdings Limited Chief Executive, Information, Communications & Building Technologies Ir Dave Chan; Chinachem General Manager, Environmental Science Mr Raymond Kwok; Guardforce Group General Manager, Business Strategy & Transformation Mr Steven Leung; and ASTRI Chief Commercial Director Dr Ivan Sham. Under the theme “Innovation in Practice: Scaling Up the Adoption of Sustainable Solutions in Private Residential Projects”, the panel explored opportunities for the commercialisation of green technologies in the residential market.
An on-site I&T showcase area was also set up, where ten HKSTP partner companies and R&D centres exhibited innovative solutions across three major technology areas, namely digitalisation and artificial intelligence, coatings and building envelope systems, and low-carbon and circular materials. The technologies on display included AI and energy management, radiative cooling, vacuum-insulated glass, carbon-absorbing bricks and net-zero concrete, responding to the decarbonisation needs of the residential sector. Buildings in Hong Kong account for around 90% of the city’s total electricity consumption and generate more than 50% of its carbon emissions. Residential electricity use represents 32% of total electricity consumption in the building sector. Promoting energy-efficient design and the adoption of green technologies in the residential sector is therefore critical to achieving Hong Kong’s carbon neutrality target by 2050.
CLP Power has been actively promoting the electrification of residential buildings and the development of all-electric homes. Working closely with developers and public housing authorisations and organisations, the company has introduced all-electric cooking and smart energy solutions in residential projects.
CLP Power also supports households in upgrading to high energy-efficiency appliances with Grade 1 Energy Labels, helping them save energy, reduce carbon emissions, and improve living standards. This year, CLP Power allocated HK$30 million from the CLP Community Energy Saving Fund to launch the Energy Efficient Appliance Replacement Scheme, helping 11,000 underprivileged households replace appliances including air conditioners, water heaters and washing machines with higher energy efficient models, thereby reducing energy costs and enhancing electrical safety.
In addition, CLP Power’s smart meters and mobile apps empower customers to monitor their household electricity consumption, improve energy efficiency and make more informed energy choices to support a low-carbon lifestyle.
The “Sustainable Residential Living Conference”, jointly organised by CLP Power and HKSTP, translates the two organisations’ shared vision for greener housing into concrete action. The conference serves as a platform to exchange insights, showcase innovative solutions and foster collaboration among industry stakeholders. By connecting industry needs with emerging technologies, it aims to accelerate the adoption of smart and sustainable solutions across the residential sector.
HKSTP’s I&T ecosystem brings together more than 230 green technology companies. Since the launch of the GreenTech Hub at InnoCentre in Kowloon Tong last year, its partner network has expanded to 20 public and private sector organisations. It has also hosted more than 100 green technology events and facilitated over 360 business matching sessions, with a view to fostering synergy between green technology and green finance, and supporting Hong Kong’s development as an international hub for green technology and green finance.
