We are currently developing a Hong Kong Sign Language (HKSL) translation avatar. Recognising the service gap resulting from the shortage of interpreters in Hong Kong, we are dedicated to providing accessible communication for the hearing-impaired community. By harnessing the power of AI, we aim to revolutionise the way individuals with hearing impairments interact and communicate in their daily lives.
The Deaf and Hard of Hearing face significant communication barriers in education, public transport inaccessibility, and risks in emergencies, leading to low self-esteem and isolation. In Hong Kong, there are only 50 registered interpreters for a quarter million people, resulting in long wait times for interpretation services.
To improve accessibility, we are developing a Sign Language Translation AI that aims to enhance communication in various settings, such as entertainment venues, museums, and healthcare. We employ Hard of Hearing and HKSL-trained students to ensure accurate translations and gather direct feedback from the community. Our goal is to automate non-essential interpretations, freeing interpreters for critical situations like courtrooms and hospitals.
