"The 1st Greater Bay Area 5G Application and Innovation Challenge" to Accelerate Smart City Development in GBA Concludes in Triumph

(Hong Kong, 23 November 2020)The 1st Greater Bay Area 5G Application and Innovation Challenge 2020” (AIC 2020), jointly organised by Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation (HKSTP), The Greater Bay Area (GBA) 5G Industry Alliance (The Alliance), China Mobile Hong Kong (CMHK), and Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute (ASTRI), was concluded with an award ceremony at Hong Kong Science Park on 20 November 2020. 

Centred on the theme of “Unleash the power of 5G - Build a Better Life", AIC 2020 attracted 55 participating teams from Hong Kong, Macao and Guangdong. These teams including students, start-ups and innovators were encouraged to harness the power of 5G and offer innovative solutions in seven areas, with a view to nurturing talent and driving industry adoption for Smart City development in the GBA region. The seven targeted areas are: education, entertainment, finance, property management, logistics and transportation, healthcare, and industrial manufacturing. 

Ir Peter Yeung, Head of Electronics & ICT Clusters of HKSTP, said: “5G is set to revolutionise the way we live and work as well as the development of future technologies. The collaboration with The Alliance, CMHK and ASTRI opens a new avenue for HKSTP to spur innovation with 5G. As the city’s flagship incubation and R&D base, HKSTP serves as a living lab for more than 900 technology companies to test and commercialise their ideas to solutions. Partnering with world-class industry leaders, we support our park companies in 5G communication and industry application development from technical services in hardware prototyping to RF and FPGA training as well as business and POC opportunities while deploying 5G network at the Park, building a vibrant 5G ecosystem for Smart City development in Hong Kong and the GBA.” 

Mr Sean Lee, The GBA 5G Industry Alliance Founding Chairman, Director and CEO of CMHK said: “5G networks have been continuously developing in the GBA and commercial applications are still in the embryonic stage. The Alliance hopes that through this innovative technology competition, we can discover and absorb innovation and technology talent so that participants can put their innovative technology concepts into practice. Also, we strongly encourage the industry to take advantage of 5G features, to deploy new 5G application solutions that can be widely applied to various industry sectors, to build an open and win-win 5G industry ecosystem."

Dr Justin Chuang, Vice President, Communications Technologies, ASTRI said: “ASTRI is committed to developing and building key software, intelligent application platforms and next-generation communication network solutions based on 5G technology to promote the development of Hong Kong into a smart city. In The First Greater Bay Area 5G Application and Innovation Challenge, I am delighted to see many outstanding contestants using scientific research and boundless creativity to design brand new 5G application solutions that catalyse rapid scientific research in the GBA."

After rounds of screening, 10 elite teams were selected to present their innovative ideas on-site at the final for an esteemed panel of industry leaders and experts. The awards were based on five judging criteria: innovation and creativity, functionality, benefit and quality, market potential, and social impact on the GBA 5G network. HKSTP’s incubation programme member CU Coding Limited garnered the AIC 2020’s most prestigious accolade - Gold Award; and two other incubatees Tech Hill Limited and Karta-X Technologies Ltd received the Innovator Award and the Characteristic Award respectively. In addition to awards and prizes, these awarding teams would enjoy financial and technical support to fast track their 5G solutions for industry adoption and application.
