Robocon Hong Kong Contest 2025 Presents “Robot Basketball” Competition HKU Crowns Champion, Set to Represent Hong Kong at the ABU Robocon 2025 in Mongolia this August

(Hong Kong, 23 June 2025) - Organised by Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation (HKSTP) and in collaboration with the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers, the Hong Kong Computer Society and Radio Television Hong Kong, the annual academic innovation and technology (I&T) competition, Robocon Hong Kong Contest 2025 (Robocon HK 2025) reached a spectacular conclusion yesterday at Hong Kong Science Park.  The event gathered over 200 outstanding interdisciplinary talents from 8 local tertiary institutions, who demonstrated their technological innovation and creativity by fusing artificial intelligence (AI) with robotic capabilities in captivating robot basketball matches.  This unprecedented combination of sport and technology not only brought basketball excitement into the realm of I&T, but also showcased the vibrant spirit, ingenuity, and immense potential of Hong Kong's young innovators.

Drawing inspiration from the basketball culture of Mongolia, this year's competition was themed "Robot Basketball", emphasising the spirit of "Team Effort, Ultimate Success" through the collaboration of two robots. The competition follows international basketball rules, divided into red and blue teams that take turns attacking, with each team sending out two self-designed robotic "players" to compete in real time. 13 participating teams displayed challenging skills such as passing and shooting in an intense and thrilling environment, creating an electrifying atmosphere that immersed spectators in the excitement typically reserved for live sporting events.

After intense and closely contested matches, Team Virtus of The University of Hong Kong triumphed as champions of Robocon HK 2025, demonstrating exceptional technological innovation, seamless teamwork, and steady on-field performance.  Their impressive achievement highlights the remarkable talent and potential of Hong Kong’s young innovators.  As winner of Robocon HK 2025, the team will represent Hong Kong at the ABU Robocon 2025 in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, this August, competing against elite teams from the Asia-Pacific region, exchanging valuable technological experiences, and promoting Hong Kong’s I&T capabilities on the global stage.

HKSTP is dedicated to establishing Robocon Hong Kong Contest as an impactful platform for fostering an innovation atmosphere and cultivating the next generation of tech leaders. The competition inspires young minds to pursue careers in I&T, fuelling Hong Kong’s global competitiveness. Looking ahead, Hong Kong will host the ABU Robocon 2026, marking its second time as host since 2012. This significant event will attract top tech talents from the Asia-Pacific region, offering students unparallel opportunities to collaborate, innovate, and shine on an international stage. HKSTP will continue to champion local innovation, empower young talents, and advance Hong Kong as a world-class I&T hub.

The awards were presented by Mr Tony Wong, Commissioner for Digital Policy, to the winning teams.
