(Hong Kong, 2 November 2022) – Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation (HKSTP) co-organised the sixth annual Gerontech and Innovation Expo cum Summit (GIES) with the HKSAR Government and The Hong Kong Council of Social Service (HKCSS) from 2 to 5 November 2022 to drive broader high-touch technology and innovation adoption in solving critical aging population issues in Hong Kong and beyond.

The current life expectancy for Hong Kong in 2022 is 85.16 years, ranked first in the world. As the population ages, it is an evolving trend of matching technology advancements to the health, housing, mobility, communication, leisure and work needs of the aging-in-place (AIP). AIP seniors (i.e. older adults living in the community) makes up 90% of the elderly population.

Dr Sunny Chai, Chairman of HKSTP, said: “As the city’s largest I&T ecosystem, HKSTP continues to provide support across the translational journey of gerontech for companies at different development stages. At our Hub of Gerontech at GIES, we connect stakeholders from government, industry, academic and research sectors to bring life-changing and high-touch innovations to improve elderly wellbeing and the healthcare system. Hong Kong has a unique opportunity with our growing aging population and vibrant I&T ecosystem to showcase new ways to tackle critical issues and improve the quality of life for elderly and caregivers with innovative technologies beyond borders.”

Taking place at the Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Centre, this year’s GIES continues to provide a platform for stakeholders to engage in dialogue and collaboration for broader adoption of gerontech. Exhibitors has increased by almost two-fold this year to 200 since 2017, in which the participation from HKSTP partner companies and incubatees have grown more than double over the last five years.

This year, HKSTP’s Hub of Gerontech-themed pavilion at GIES showcases a range of gerontech innovations from 45 park companies and incubatees across seven key categories. These included vital sign monitoring, rehabilitation and cognitive care, fall risk management and anti-wandering, service operation, tech-enabled care, sensory aids and health screening.

While the Institutional Elderly Care Zone features technology solutions for institutional care, the interactive “Aging-in-Place” Zone showcases 12 AIP solutions which are introduced by a cohort of elderly ambassadors. In partnership with Lingnan University, HKSTP has drawn together 20 trained elderly ambassadors to share their user experience with these user-friendly solutions.

The GIES 2022 event also features an opening panel themed “Tech-enhanced Social Care – the Way Ahead after the Pandemic” on the 4 November summit with senior government and industry leaders including:

  • Mr Chris Sun, Secretary for Labour and Welfare, HKSAR Government;
