(Hong Kong, 17 August 2016) - Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation (“HKSTP”) congratulates one of the partner companies in Hong Kong Science Park, Sierra Wireless, for winning the Best Mobile Technology Breakthrough – Asia at GSMA’s fifth annual Mobile World Congress Shanghai with mangOH™, a plug-and-play open source hardware platform for developing Internet of Things (“IoT”) devices. It works with the cellular wireless modules designed and developed by Sierra Wireless’ R&D team, leveraging the state-of-the-art laboratories and facilities in Hong Kong Science Park.

Together with Legato™, Sierra Wireless’ open source embedded software framework, the mangOH™ reference design provides industrial-grade, sensor-to-cloud platforms for building wireless IoT solutions. mangOH™ designs are built around CF3™ socket compatible processors, including wireless processors (2G to 4G & LTE-M). The hardware and software enable easy integration for developers with limited area expertise to develop and manufacture connected products.  By lowering the skill barrier for entry, mangOH™ can help start-ups interested in entering the IoT arena to significantly reduce the time required for the development of products, effectively improving their competitiveness in the long run.

Albert Wong, Chief Executive Officer of HKSTP, said: “HKSTP has been keen to facilitate the development of technology-based products and solutions that will enable us to live, work and progress in age healthily. Steering towards an IoT-empowered future where everything is connected, we are thrilled to have Sierra Wireless as our long-time partner in our ecosystem. Their plug-and-play open source hardware platform mangOH™ is designed to expedite the emergence of industrial-grade IoT solutions, which in turn enable Hong Kong to fast track the building up of its advanced manufacturing sector.”

“The presence of multinational tech companies, such as Sierra Wireless, and smaller companies in one tight-knit community enables HKSTP to cultivate a technology ecosystem that is greater than the sum of its parts, thanks to its cluster effect attracting more talent and companies to come, creating more opportunities for the ecosystem’s habitants to network with each other and flourish together,” said Albert Wong.

Philippe Guillemette, Chief Technology Officer at Sierra Wireless, commented: “We believe by simplifying the processes of creating new, innovative IoT devices, we can help realise the true potential of IoT. By making mangOH™ truly open source and easy to use, developers are free to bring their innovations to life quickly and easily. We highly appreciate the support of Science Park’s world-class laboratories and testing facilities.”

“We are delighted to see that Sierra Wireless has benefited from the lab facilities in Science Park. HKSTP is committed to building a vibrant ecosystem where stakeholders from various disciplines can interact and thrive together, delivering a fruitful and profitable tomorrow for all,” continued Albert Wong.
