Sensor Hub



We can all be amateur meteorologists right here at Science Park.

The Sensor Hub at Science Park has a series of sensors and IoT tools that monitor the ambient and environmental conditions around us. They deliver real-time measurements, with data available for further analysis.

With the sensors at the Park, you can gauge the level of PM2.5, lightning activity nearby, or even water quality parameters. 

 

Objectives of the Sensor Hub

  • To provide laboratory services and a testbed for pilots and trials of new sensor devices/systems at Hong Kong Science Park
  • To transform new sensing concepts into real-life applications
  • To promote the adoption of new sensor technologies for smart city
  • To accelerate the development of new integrated sensor systems and commercialisation

Key Functions of the Sensor Hub

  • Test smart sensors in a heterogeneous living environment
  • Acquisition of user data and feedback on smart sensors
  • Evaluation of the key building blocks of smart sensor systems for extending sensors into new markets and new applications

CALL FOR IDEAS

Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD) has recently installed an outdoor LoRa Gateway in Science Park as part of the EMSD Government-Wide IoT Network (GWIN). GWIN is a common network infrastructure providing cost-effective connectivity for a multitude of IoT sensors, encouraging the development of innovative sensor solutions for smart government and smart city applications.

1. Environment Sensors at 18E

They measure:

  • Water temperature
  • Water pH value
  • Dissolved oxygen level in water

Application: Water quality monitoring for aquaculture

2. Radar Sensors at West Avenue (near 10W and Energy Tower 2)

Radar-based motion detection of moving objects

They perform:

  • Automobile counting
  • Car speed tracking

Application: Traffic flow monitoring (counting, speed and direction tracking) on highways

3. Radar Sensors at building entrance

Radar Sensors integrated in the ceiling lights at the entrance of buildings - 1E, 1W, 2E, 5W, 11W and 16W, powered by Infineon Technologies Hong Kong Limited

Radar-based motion detection of moving objects

They perform:

  • people counting
  • tracking the direction of movement

Application: People flow monitoring (counting, direction tracking) indoors

4. Wifi Sensors at Atrium Link, 8W and 10W

Powered by Hong Kong University of Science and Technology

Detect Wi-Fi signals from handheld devices carried by people

They perform:

  • People counting
  • Indoor positioning

Application:

  • Measure visitor numbers for statistical purposes.
  • Record people’s average duration of stay at specific locations

5. Radar Sensors at West Avenue (outside 11W)

Radar Sensors at the lamp poles outside 11W, powered by Arrow Asia Pac Limited and Infineon Technologies Hong Kong Limited

Radar-based motion detection of moving objects

They perform:

  • Automobile counting
  • Car speed tracking

Application: Monitor parking space vacancy

6. Environmental sensors at 8W

Environmental sensors inside the Environmental City Box, powered by Siemens Limited

They measure

  • Gas sensing (NO2, CO, SO2, O3, PM2.5)
  • Temperature
  • Humidity

Application: Air and environment quality monitoring

7. Onmiflow lamppost at 8W

Onmiflow, powered by Siemens Limited, include passive infrared sensor for motion detection and wind speed sensor for wind monitoring

There are several unique features:

  • powered by wind and solar with battery storage for smart lighting application
  • motion detection of people to control the light level
  • measure velocity of wind for wind monitoring

9. BLE Beacon at 12W

BLE Beacon for indoor positioning with energy harvesting function, powered by IOE Technology Limited

10. LoRaWan GPS Tracker at 12W

LoRaWan GPS Tracker for outdoor positioning and orientation, powered by Platysens Limited

It detect the GPS signal and transfer the positioning information to cloud via LoRaWan
