Smart City Innovation Centre

The Smart City Innovation Centre (SCIC) at Science Park is the first 5G innovation lab in Hong Kong. Spearheaded by HSKTP and ASTRI, the lab is dedicated to promoting Hong Kong’s smart city development.

Equipped with state-of-the-art technologies and provides laboratory services with a 5G Application Test Bed and a M2M Communications Lab. SCIC also provides a purpose-designed environment and sought-after resources to facilitate 5G development by various stakeholders in Hong Kong.

It serves as an open innovative platform for users to incubate ideas, share knowledge and develop collaborations on viable Smart City solutions. Laboratory training programmes, industry collaboration workshops and university brainstorming workshops are also offered here for sharing insights and inspiring innovation towards a smarter future for Hong Kong.

It enables science park partners to conduct in-depth research on 5G technologies while developing, carrying out PoC, and commercializing leading-edge pre-5G, 5G and M2M applications and solutions.

Sample applications

  1. Internet of Vehicles: Initiate two-way communication between vehicles and the environment through world-leading C-V2X technology, enhancing the road safety for pedestrians as well as vehicles.

  2. Laser Projection Heads Up Display: Immersive in-car display technology for future driving experience and driving assistance.

  3. Holographic Head Mount Display: A full HD and wide-angle wearable display device feature with light weight and low power consumption — a fundamental device for augmented reality applications.

  4. Virtual Reality Head Mount Display: An all-in-one VR head mount display featuring gesture control, position tracking and see-through ability — an ideal platform to drive VR for many pre-5G applications such as remote-control drones, VR live streaming and facial recognition.

  5. AI Chatbot: A chatbot that targets niche applications such as Cantonese and English mixed language, speech with light accents (catering to diversity within the Greater Bay Area for instance), colloquial Chinese and slang.

  6. Touchless Palm Authentication: A new biometric authentication technology that uses palm prints and additional recognition features. ASTRI and its partners are working on a new smaller, faster model of a touchless palm print recognition device.

  7. Indoor and Outdoor Navigation: A scalable cloud-based Smart City platform that can connect all these devices with seamless indoor and outdoor geographic information (GIS), and time stamps. It is capable of capturing, monitoring and analysing real-time data, as well as enabling smart navigation.

  8. Smart Vending Machine: A smart vending machine with a number of special features including bill payment, booking system, real-time stock level checking and multiple means of payment.

  9. Digital ID: A blockchain based digital identity management platform to replace existing paper-based identity verification processes.

  10. Big Data Analytics for Smart City: A big data platform for experts to use big data technology as well as machine learning, deep learning and graph algorithms to provide innovative data management, analytics and regulatory solutions for government and different industry applications.

  11. Critical Communication: A new network architecture and technology to minimise communication latency.

    -  Mobile edge computing will drive services closer to customers by decreasing latency and allowing UE Computing to migrate to Edge gateway to enhance performance

    - BTrunC is the new China standard for emergency communications.

  12. Enhanced Broadband: An Ultra-Dense Network (UDN) and Centralised RAN (C-RAN) to virtualise and aggregate 100+ cells to significantly enhance bandwidth and capacity performance

  13. Massive IoT: A cellular IoT endpoint solution that offers best-in-class performance and power consumption, and can be seamlessly integrated into a System on Chip (SoC).
